When the music business meets artificial intelligence, it moves into unknown territory. As a part of the debate about AI and music, STIM put together a report. It describes AI use when creating music based on four typical cases.

Artificial intelligence will provide possibilities and challenges that we yet only see fragments of. To a large extent, this also applies to the conditions for creating music and copyright practice.

The report circles four typical cases of using AI:

  1. AI as a tool in human music creation
  2. AI-generated music inspired by existing works
  3. AI-generated music based on existing works
  4. AI-generated music without human intervention
     

No matter the extent of AI involvement in music creation, STIM's perception is that transparency, traceability, and legal source management are crucial for the copyright system to handle the progress of AI.

We at STIM also believe that a sustainable music market - where rightsholders receive fair compensation for music use - has to build upon license agreements. It requires that legislators, courts, law enforcement authorities, and parties in the music market all take their responsibility and work together for a license-friendly infrastructure.
