What rules apply if you want to remix a song or sample protected music?

You must have permission from the person who owns the rights. Start by contacting the owner of the recording, which is often a record label. Check IFPI to find out which record label you need to contact. In addition to permission from the record label, you also need to contact the owner of the song (composer, lyricist), who is often represented by a music publisher.
